What you need to know before traveling:

Carry-On Bag

  • Check with your airline to find out which items you can bring on board the plane, as certain items may be prohibited (e.g., liquids must not exceed a certain volume).
  • Airplane tickets/boarding passes
  • Passport
  • Credit cards
  • Driver's license
  • Medic-Alert bracelet/card
  • Health insurance certificate
  • Certificate of vaccination (if applicable)
  • Medical history summary (Including your blood type and list of medications)

First Aid Kit

  • Elastic bandage
  • Dressings, adhesive tape & safety pins
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Butterfly closures
  • Gauze pads
  • Instant cold packs
  • Antibiotic ointment(e.g, Polysporin)
  • Zinc oxide ointment
  • Tweezers
  • Pocket knife/scissors
  • Thermometer

Toiletries

  • Sunscreen (body/lips)
  • DEET or icaridin insect repellent

Medication

  • Prescription medication

Over-the-counter products

  • Analgesics/anti-inflammatories (e.g., Tylenol, Advil)
  • Antacids (e.g., Tums, Pepcid)
  • Antidiarrheals (e.g., Imodium)
  • Topical antifungal (e.g., Canesten)
  • Antihistamines (e.g., Benadryl, Reactine)
  • Decongestants
  • Mild laxatives
  • Antinausea medication (e.g., Gravol)
  • Cold sore ointment (e.g., Abreva)

Pack all medications in your carry-on baggage in their original, labelled containers. Visit a travel health clinic for your vaccinations if you are going to a destination where certain vaccines are recommended or required. If you wish to bring certain medications with you, such as drugs that protect against malaria, diarrhea or altitude sickness, speak to your health care provider.

IN PREPARATION FOR YOUR TRIP

  • Buy a cell phone plan for travel abroad
  • Obtain your travel visa (if required)
  • Purchase travel insurance
  • Obtain an international driver's license (if required)
  • Make a copy of your passport
  • Buy foreign currency (e.g., Euros, US dollars) for use in your destination country
